I have recently developed a scarless technique for placing the titanium implant for Bone Anchored Auditory Processors (commonly known as BAHAs) during the 1st stage Medpor ear reconstruction surgery. Currently, this technique can be performed with both the Cochlear Baha and the Oticon Medical Ponto products. This provides my Microtia and Atresia patients the ability to hear directly through bone conduction and is an excellent alternative to those that cannot have or choose not to have atresia repair.
Since I’m already operating in the same area when I do the ear reconstruction, I have easy access to the bone for placing the BAHA implant without needing the traditional incision that is typically used for this surgery. This also eliminates the need for an additional surgery with general anesthesia after the ear reconstruction. The implant must integrate into the bone prior to attaching and using the abutment piece. The abutment can be attached though a simple procedure under local anesthesia at the patient’s local ENT or with me during the 2nd Stage Medpor ear reconstruction surgery.
Please note that placement of the bone conduction implant can only be done on patients age 5 and older due to FDA regulations and the thickness of the child’s skull.
The feedback from my patients has been extremely positive regarding this new procedure and I continue to strive to develop new advances in my surgical techniques.
