LAMAC 2013 – Simply Magical!

Our Earicles 1st annual Los Angeles Microtia and Atresia Conference was simply incredible. I have been eagerly anticipating the event for almost a year, and I am thrilled that it exceeded my high expectations. The conference speakers were all extremely informative and passionate about helping those with microtia and atresia. Families were able to meet with surgeons to discuss their specific medical situation and receive a better understanding of their surgical options. But, more than that, there was “magic” in the air at LAMAC. A sense of compassion, commitment, and belonging. Families immediately connected. Parents and grandparents shared stories, shared tears, shared laughs. Children played, swam and made s’mores together. They literally touch each others’ ears and hearing devices without reservation.

The mission of my new non-profit, Earicles, Miracles for Ears, is Education, Research, Advocacy and Surgical Care. As I sat back and watched the weekend unfold, my commitment to Earicles grew even stronger. This is only the beginning.

I was deeply moved by a touching speech at LAMAC by 9 year old Santiago, my first Earicles patient, who lives in Ecuador. In addition, Anel and David Herrera, along with many of my patients, surprised me by putting together this amazing video at the end of the conference.

A special thanks to all our LAMAC sponsors and volunteers for making this dream a reality. Also, a special thank you to Melissa Tumblin and Ear Community for collaborating with LAMAC to have such a wonderful and well-attended Microtia and Atresia Summer Family Picnic. I look forward to LAMAC 2014!
